Whether a prop firm allows positions to stay open over the weekend sounds like a simple yes/no question — but the real risk lives in the details: swap costs, weekend gap exposure, and how those interact with your drawdown limits when the market reopens.

Markets close for the weekend and reopen with a gap — price can jump significantly between Friday's close and Sunday/Monday's open in response to news that happened while markets were closed (geopolitical events, unexpected data releases, central bank statements). A trader holding a position through that gap has zero ability to react until the market reopens, at which point the position may already be showing a loss far beyond what a normal stop-loss would have captured.

Permission vs. Practicality

Most modern prop firms — including The5ers — technically permit holding positions overnight and over weekends. But permission isn't the same as a good idea for every position:

  • Gap risk is unmanaged risk. No stop-loss order can protect you from a gap that jumps straight through your stop level.
  • Swap fees compound on weekend holds. Many brokers/firms triple the swap charge for positions held over the weekend rollover (Friday to Monday counts as 3 days of swap in a single rollover). Always check your specific instrument's weekend swap multiplier — some assets (commodities like Crude Oil are a common example across the industry) carry unusually high weekend swap costs.
  • It still counts against your drawdown. If your account's daily loss limit resets at a fixed server time, a Monday gap against your open position hits that day's allowance immediately — you don't get a "grace period" for weekend risk you didn't control.

A Practical Framework

  1. Check whether your program restricts weekend holding at all — some firms/programs prohibit it entirely for evaluation stages; others (like The5ers) generally allow it across all programs.
  2. Check the swap cost on the specific instrument you're holding — a small, low-swap forex pair carries very different weekend-hold economics than a high-swap commodity.
  3. Size for the gap, not just the visible chart. If you wouldn't be comfortable with a 2x-normal adverse move against your position with no ability to exit, don't hold it into the weekend.
  4. Understand your firm's daily loss reset time — a Monday-morning gap loss is measured against that day's limit the moment the market reopens.

Risk Disclaimer

Prop trading evaluations involve risk of capital loss. Evaluation fees are non-refundable if you breach the account rules. Funded accounts operate in simulated trading environments — payouts depend on each firm's policies and are not guaranteed. Past performance in an evaluation does not guarantee consistent returns on a funded account. Always read the full terms and conditions of any program before purchasing.
