A forex trading app is legal in India only if it routes your trades to a SEBI-recognised exchange (NSE, BSE or MSE) through a SEBI-registered broker. These apps let you trade exchange-listed currency derivatives: USD-INR, EUR-INR, GBP-INR, JPY-INR, plus the cross-currency contracts EUR-USD, GBP-USD and USD-JPY. Apps from offshore forex/CFD brokers are a different matter. The RBI's Alert List names many of them, including Exness, HFM, Vantage, JustMarkets, PU Prime, VT Markets, XM, IC Markets and Tickmill, as well as the websites metatrader4.com and metatrader5.com. The RBI also says sending margin abroad for this kind of trading is not allowed under the LRS.
Legal vs Not Permitted
| Legal route | Not permitted for residents | |
|---|---|---|
| App type | Trading app of a SEBI-registered stockbroker | Offshore broker app, or MT4/MT5 connected to one |
| Market | NSE / BSE / MSE currency derivatives | OTC forex and CFDs |
| Pairs | INR pairs plus EUR-USD, GBP-USD, USD-JPY | Any pair the broker lists |
| Funding | Indian bank account to the SEBI broker | Overseas remittance for margin, which LRS doesn't allow |
| Regulator | SEBI (exchange) and the RBI framework | Foreign regulator only |

How to Check an App Before Using It
- Confirm the broker is SEBI-registered. Search the broker's name on SEBI's intermediary list.
- Check that the app trades on an exchange. Contracts should show NSE, BSE or MSE symbols, not "XAUUSD CFD" or "1:500 leverage".
- Search the RBI Alert List for the app's brand and website. Not being on the list doesn't make an app authorised, the RBI says. Check the RBI's list of authorised ETPs too.
- Never pay a "trader" or "account manager" through UPI to a personal account.
Why Offshore Apps Look Legit
They often hold real licences in Seychelles, Mauritius or Cyprus, and support local deposits. A foreign licence doesn't make them an authorised electronic trading platform for Indian residents under FEMA. Indian banks have blocked or reversed payments to these platforms for this reason.
