Worked Margin & Stop-Out Math on a $1,000 Account

Understanding the difference between account leverage (which determines margin locked per trade) and effective leverage (total notional position size divided by account equity) is critical on both VT Markets account types.

Formula: Required Margin = (Lot Size × Contract Size × Market Price) ÷ Leverage

Suppose you deposit $1,000 (above the VT Markets minimum deposit of $100) and open 1.0 standard lot of EUR/USD (100,000 EUR) at an exchange rate of 1.1000 ($110,000 notional value):

  • At 1:500 Leverage (Offshore):
    • Required Used Margin: $110,000 ÷ 500 = $220.00 (0.20%).
    • Initial Free Margin: $1,000 - $220 = $780.00 (Margin Level = ($1,000 ÷ $220) × 100 = 454.5%).
    • Pip Value: $10.00 per pip. Even though only $220 is locked as margin, an adverse move of 89 pips ($890 loss) drops your equity to $110.00 ($110 ÷ $220 = 50% Margin Level), triggering automatic stop-out liquidation if the account stop-out threshold is 50%.
  • At 1:100 Leverage:
    • Required Used Margin: $110,000 ÷ 100 = $1,100.00 (1.00%).
    • You cannot open 1.0 full lot on a $1,000 balance; a 0.10 mini lot ($11,000 notional) locks $110.00 in margin and drops pip value to $1.00 per pip, giving your account an 890-pip buffer before equity reaches $110.

Margin Call vs Stop-Out Levels Explained

VT Markets uses automated margin monitoring in MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 based on your real-time Margin Level (%) = (Equity ÷ Used Margin) × 100:

  1. Margin Call Warning (Typically 80% – 100%): When floating losses reduce your Equity so that Margin Level reaches the margin call threshold, your terminal highlights the trade row in red. You cannot open new margin-consuming positions unless you deposit funds or close existing exposure.
  2. Automated Stop-Out Liquidation (Typically 20% – 50% by Entity): If floating losses continue and your Margin Level hits the stop-out threshold, the server automatically closes your open positions starting with the largest floating loss until Margin Level recovers above the threshold.
  3. Negative Balance Protection Notice: Retail clients under ASIC (#516246) receive mandatory negative balance protection. Under the offshore entity (VT Markets Limited, FSC Mauritius), check your specific Client Agreement before trading volatile weekend gaps or Tier-1 news events. How to Change Leverage in the VT Markets Client Portal

You can lower or adjust your account leverage at any time without opening a new trading account:

  1. Close Open Positions: Ensure your MT4 or MT5 account has zero open trades so margin recalculation does not trigger an immediate stop-out.
  2. Log In to the Client Portal: Visit the official login page and select Accounts Overview from the left dashboard menu.
  3. Click the Gear / Action Icon: Next to your live or demo account number, select Change Leverage.
  4. Select Your Target Cap (e.g., 1:100, 1:200, 1:500): Submit the request and confirm in your MT4/MT5 terminal that the new ratio is active before placing your next trade.
