Forex Signals: What They Are and How to Vet a Provider — cover image

A forex signal is a trade idea: a pair, a direction, an entry price, a stop-loss and a take-profit. It comes from a person or a program, and you either copy it by hand or let it copy automatically. There are three common forms. Manual signals arrive by Telegram, email or app. Platform signals, such as MQL5 Signals inside MetaTrader, copy a provider's deals straight into your account. Broker copy trading, such as the VT Markets or Vantage apps, mirrors a provider in proportion to the money you allocate. None of them guarantees profit. MetaQuotes itself says the subscriber "accepts all execution risks" and that historical statistics can't guarantee future profitability.

Types of Signals

Type How it reaches you Who executes Typical cost
Manual (Telegram, email) Message with entry, SL, TP You, by hand Free to monthly fee
MQL5 Signals (MT4/MT5) Built into MetaTrader Automatically, in your account Free or a monthly subscription set by the provider
Broker copy trading Broker app or portal Automatically, proportional to your allocation Profit share (e.g. up to 50% at VT Markets)
Third-party copy platforms (e.g. ZuluTrade) Platform connected to your broker Automatically Spread mark-up or subscription plus performance fee

How to Vet a Signal Provider

  1. Verified, live track record. Look for a real-money account monitored by the platform, not screenshots.
  2. Maximum drawdown, not just growth. A provider up 300% with a 70% drawdown can wipe you out.
  3. Track record length. Under six months tells you very little.
  4. Leverage and lot size compared with the provider's balance.
  5. Costs after subscription and profit share.
  6. Your broker's execution. Slippage and spread differences mean your results won't match the provider's exactly.

Red Flags

  • "Guaranteed" or "risk-free" profits
  • Paying for VIP groups with no verifiable account history
  • "Account managers" asking for your login or for deposits to a personal wallet
  • Pressure to deposit with a specific unregulated broker

Signals vs Copy Trading vs EAs

Signals tell you what to trade. Copy trading places those trades for you. An Expert Advisor is a program that runs your own rules automatically. For mechanics and costs of copy trading, see what is copy trading and VT Markets copy trading.

Forex Signals: Your Questions Answered

Are forex signals worth it?

Only if the provider has a verifiable live track record with drawdown you can accept, and the costs leave you a net profit. Most paid Telegram signals can't show that.

Are there free forex signals?

Yes. MQL5 has free signals, and some brokers publish analysis. Free doesn't mean reliable, so apply the same checks.

Can signals be copied automatically?

Yes, through MQL5 Signals in MetaTrader, broker copy-trading apps or third-party platforms connected to your broker account.
