Forex is the market for exchanging currencies. A CFD (contract for difference) is a type of contract you can use to trade many markets, including forex. With most online brokers, a "forex trade" on EUR/USD is in practice a leveraged CFD or rolling spot contract. You never take delivery of euros. You settle the price difference in cash. So the real difference is the underlying market. Forex CFDs track currency pairs, while other CFDs track indices, gold, oil, shares or crypto. Each comes with its own spreads, swaps, trading hours and leverage limits.
Side by Side
| Forex (currency pairs) | CFDs on other assets | |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying | Currency pairs, e.g. EUR/USD | Indices, commodities, shares, crypto, bonds |
| Trading hours | 24 hours, 5 days a week | Follows the underlying exchange or session |
| Typical retail leverage cap (ASIC/ESMA) | 30:1 majors, 20:1 minors | 20:1 indices and gold, 10:1 other commodities, 5:1 shares, 2:1 crypto |
| Costs | Spread or commission, plus swap | Spread or commission, plus financing; shares may carry commission |
| Ownership | None (cash-settled) | None (cash-settled) |
Leverage caps above are the retail limits under ASIC's CFD product intervention order. Offshore entities often allow much more.

Is Forex a CFD?
At most retail brokers, yes in practice. Your account agreement usually lists currency pairs as CFDs or rolling spot contracts. There are exceptions. US retail forex dealers offer spot forex, not CFDs, because CFDs aren't allowed for US retail clients. Indian residents can trade exchange-listed currency futures and options instead (India guide).
Which Should You Trade?
- Start with major forex pairs. They have the most liquidity and the tightest spreads.
- Add index or gold CFDs only once you understand their gaps, session hours and higher margin.
- Avoid single-stock and crypto CFDs at high leverage until you have a tested plan.

Forex vs CFD: Your Questions Answered
What is the difference between forex and CFD?
Forex is the currency market. A CFD is a cash-settled contract on any price, including currency pairs. Most retail forex trades are CFDs or rolling spot contracts.
Is CFD trading riskier than forex?
Not by nature, but CFDs on shares and crypto are more volatile and have lower leverage caps. Risk mainly depends on leverage and position size.
Can US residents trade CFDs?
No. CFDs aren't available to US retail clients. US residents can trade spot forex through CFTC-registered dealers.

Ready to Compare PU Prime Account Types?
PU Prime is a multi-entity broker — ASIC (Australia) and FSCA (South Africa) regulated entities offer stronger oversight, while most international clients are onboarded to the FSA Seychelles or FSC Mauritius entities. Four account tiers (Cent, Standard, Prime, ECN) range from a $20 minimum deposit to full ECN pricing.
Risk disclaimer: PU Prime is a live, regulated multi-entity broker — trading forex and CFDs is done with real capital under normal market risk (this is not a simulated prop-firm evaluation). PU Prime operates under multiple separate licenses (ASIC, FSCA, FSA Seychelles, FSC Mauritius); which entity holds your account depends on your country of residence and determines your leverage cap and protections — confirm this before funding. CFDs and leveraged forex products are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage; 62.2% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. Consider whether you understand how CFDs/forex work and whether you can afford the high risk of losing your money.
