To log in to MetaTrader 4 you need three things from your broker: your account number (login), your password and the exact server name. On desktop, go to File → Login to Trade Account, enter them and click Login. On mobile, go to Settings → New account → Login to an existing account, search for the server and sign in. If MT4 shows "Invalid account", the server, login or password is wrong. "No connection" usually means the wrong server or a network block. Your MT4 login is separate from your broker's client-portal login.
Log In on Each Device
| Device | Steps |
|---|---|
| Windows / Mac desktop | File → Login to Trade Account → login, password, server → Login |
| WebTrader | Open your broker's MT4 WebTrader link → enter login, password, server |
| iPhone / Android | Settings → New account → Login to an existing account → search server → login and password |

Master vs Investor Password
- Master password: full access, can trade.
- Investor password: read-only. Use it to show your account to someone without letting them trade.
If you log in and can't place orders, you may have used the investor password.
Fixing Common Errors
| Error | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid account | Wrong server or password | Copy the server name exactly from the welcome email; reset the password in the client portal |
| No connection | Wrong server, firewall or VPN | Rescan servers (right-click the connection status → Rescan servers); turn off VPN |
| Old version | Broker no longer supports the build | Update from your broker's download page |
| Demo account no longer works | Demo expired | Open a new demo (guide) |
| MT4 login fails in MT5 | MT4 and MT5 accounts are separate | Use the MT4 terminal, or open an MT5 account |
Security Tips
- Never share your master password, and never let an "account manager" log in for you.
- Download MT4 only from metatrader4.com or your broker (MT4 app, MT4 download).
- Turn on two-factor authentication in your broker's client portal.
For MT5, see MetaTrader 5 login.

MetaTrader 4 Login: Your Questions Answered
Where do I find my MT4 server name?
In your broker's welcome email or client portal, usually under account details. It looks like "BrokerName-Live2".
Why does MT4 say invalid account?
The login, password or server doesn't match. Check all three, and reset the trading password in your broker's portal if you need to.
Can I log in to MT4 with my email?
No. MT4 uses the numeric account number, not your email.
