You open a real MT4 account through a broker, not through MetaQuotes. Register on the broker's site or app, choose MetaTrader 4 as the platform and an account type, upload ID and proof of address (KYC), then deposit. The broker emails you an MT4 login, password and live server. Enter them under File → Login to Trade Account. You can also send a request from inside the platform (File → Open an Account → real account). That creates a preliminary account with a zero balance, which the broker must approve before you can trade.
Step by Step
- Pick a broker that offers MT4 and check its entity for your country (legit broker checklist).
- Register with your email and phone, then choose MT4 as the platform.
- Choose an account type: standard (spread only) or raw/ECN (spread plus commission). See ECN brokers.
- Set leverage and base currency. Pick a lower leverage than the maximum.
- Complete KYC: ID, plus a utility bill or bank statement under 3–6 months old.
- Deposit using a payment method in your own name.
- Log in to MT4 with the live server from your welcome email (MT4 login).

The In-Platform Route
MetaQuotes' help describes it like this. Choose Open a real account for live trading and fill in the form. MiFID-regulated brokers also ask about employment, income and experience. A preliminary account with zero balance is created. You can watch prices on it but can't trade. The broker then contacts you to finish verification and turns it into a live account.
MT4 or MT5?
Many brokers now open MT5 by default. MT4 still suits you if your EA or indicator only runs on MT4. For MT5, see open an MT5 real account.
Before You Fund
- Check the broker's minimum deposit and withdrawal fees
- Make a small test withdrawal first
- Remember that the leverage offered depends on the entity, not on MT4
