To log in to MetaTrader 5 you need three details from your broker: the trading account number (login), the trading password, and the exact server name (for example "BrokerName-Live2"). On desktop, use File → Login to Trade Account. On mobile, go to Settings → New Account and search for your broker. On the web, open your broker's WebTerminal link. There is no single "MetaTrader 5 account" you sign in to: MetaQuotes makes the software, and the account always lives with a broker.
The Three Details You Need
| Detail | What it looks like | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Login (account number) | A number, e.g. 51234567 | Broker's welcome email or client area → My accounts |
| Password | Trading (master) password | Set when you opened the account; resettable in the client area |
| Server | e.g. "Broker-Live", "Broker-Live2", "Broker-Demo" | Shown next to the account in the client area |
Your client-area / portal password is not your MT5 password. Most brokers keep the two separate. The client area handles deposits and withdrawals, and MT5 only handles trading.

Desktop (Windows / Mac)
- Open MT5 and choose File → Login to Trade Account.
- Type the account number and password.
- Pick the server from the list, or type the full name if it isn't listed.
- Tick "Save password" only on a private computer.
When you're connected, the bottom-right corner shows a ping in milliseconds and the Navigator lists your account. "No connection" or "Invalid account" means one of the three details is wrong.
Mobile (iPhone / Android)
- Open the MetaTrader 5 app and go to Settings → New Account (Android: menu → Manage accounts → +).
- Search for your broker's company name. Several legal entities may show up, so pick the one that matches your server name exactly.
- Enter your login and password.
Web
Use your broker's WebTerminal link, or the MetaQuotes web platform, and pick the same server name. Some brokers run several web servers. JustMarkets, for example, lists separate MT5 launchers for Live, Live2, Demo and Demo2.
Common Errors and Fixes
- "Invalid account": usually the wrong server. Live accounts don't work on demo servers, and Live vs Live2 matters. It can also mean an MT4 account typed into MT5. The two platforms don't share accounts.
- "No connection": check your internet connection, then rescan servers (right-click the server field), or reinstall from your broker's download page so its server list is preloaded.
- "Invalid password": you may be entering the client-area password. Reset the trading password in the broker's client area.
- Read-only access: you logged in with the investor password, which lets you view but not trade. Use the master password.
- Account disappeared: brokers archive inactive demo accounts, and some archive dormant live accounts. Check the client area or contact support.
Security Basics
Never send your trading password to anyone offering to "manage" or "recover" your account. That is a common scam route. Share the investor password only if you want someone to see your trades without being able to trade. Turn on two-factor authentication in your broker's client area if they offer it, because that's where withdrawals happen.

MetaTrader 5 Login: Your Questions Answered
Why does MT5 say 'Invalid account'?
Usually the server is wrong (Live vs Demo, or Live vs Live2), or you entered an MT4 account into MT5. Copy the exact server name from your broker's client area.
Is my MT5 password the same as my broker portal password?
Usually not. Most brokers use one password for the client area (deposits and withdrawals) and a separate trading password for MetaTrader.
What is the MT5 investor password?
A read-only password. It lets someone view your account and trades but not place orders. Share it only if you want view-only access.
Can I log in to MT5 on several devices?
Yes. You can use the same account on desktop, mobile and web at the same time. Close sessions on shared devices when you finish.
