MetaTrader 5 is free to download from metatrader5.com/en/download (the developer, MetaQuotes) or from your broker's own download page. There are versions for Windows, macOS (a native installer that bundles Wine; macOS Catalina 10.15.7 or later, Intel and Apple M-series chips), iPhone/iPad, Android (Google Play, Huawei AppGallery or APK) and a browser WebTerminal that needs no installation. The download alone doesn't let you trade real money. You need a live account with a broker that offers MT5, and the login details that broker gives you.
Which Version Should You Download?
| Version | Where to get it | Best for | Main limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows desktop | metatrader5.com or broker site | Full analysis, Expert Advisors, strategy tester | Windows only (natively) |
| macOS desktop | metatrader5.com installer (.pkg) | Mac users who want the full desktop terminal | Runs inside Wine; needs Catalina 10.15.7+ |
| iPhone / iPad | App Store | Monitoring and placing trades on the go | 9 timeframes, 30 indicators; no EAs |
| Android | Google Play, AppGallery, APK | Same as iOS on Android devices | 9 timeframes, 30 indicators; no EAs |
| WebTerminal | Browser (metatrader5.com or broker link) | Shared or locked-down computers; Linux/ChromeOS | No Expert Advisors; fewer tools than desktop |
According to MetaQuotes, the desktop terminal has 21 timeframes, more than 80 built-in indicators, netting and hedging position modes, the MQL5 development environment, an economic calendar and a built-in VPS option. The mobile apps cover 3 chart types, 9 timeframes, 30 indicators and 24 analytical objects.

Download From the Official Source
Fake "MT5" installers and cloned apps are a known way to steal broker credentials. Stick to these sources:
- metatrader5.com for desktop and WebTerminal.
- The official App Store / Google Play listing published by MetaQuotes for mobile.
- Your broker's download page, which often gives you an installer with the broker's servers already filled in.
Don't install MT5 from a link sent in Telegram or WhatsApp groups, and never type your trading password into an app you didn't install yourself. Note that some regulators list platform websites in their warnings. India's RBI Alert List, for example, includes metatrader4.com and metatrader5.com. That warning is about dealing with unauthorised forex platforms from India, and it affects whether using MT5 through an offshore broker is permitted where you live.
Installing on Windows and Mac
Windows: run the installer, accept the licence, and the terminal opens straight onto a "demo account" dialog. Cancel it if you already have a broker account.
Mac: download the .pkg installer from MetaQuotes and run it. It downloads and configures Wine automatically and asks you to install the Mono and Gecko packages. Accept both. If you used MT5 on a Mac before, MetaQuotes recommends removing an old installation built on Wine older than 8.0.1 before reinstalling. Back up your templates and Expert Advisors first.
Linux / ChromeOS: use the WebTerminal in a browser. MetaQuotes positions it as the cross-platform option.
After Installing: Connect to a Broker
- Open an MT5 account with a broker. Opening an MT4 account by mistake is a common error, because the two platforms don't share accounts.
- In MT5, go to File → Login to Trade Account.
- Enter the account number, trading password and the exact server name your broker gave you.
Our MetaTrader 5 login guide covers server errors and password problems. If you'd rather not install anything, see the MT5 WebTerminal guide.
Choosing a Broker for MT5
The platform is identical everywhere, but costs, leverage, instruments and legal protection depend on the broker and the entity that holds your account. Compare spread plus commission, the regulator that covers your country, and the withdrawal process, not the platform logo. Our MT5 broker comparison sets these out side by side.

MetaTrader 5 Download: Your Questions Answered
Is MetaTrader 5 free to download?
Yes. MetaQuotes distributes MT5 free for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and the browser. Brokers don't charge for the platform; you pay trading costs (spread, commission, swap) on the account you connect.
Can I use MT5 on a Mac?
Yes. MetaQuotes provides a macOS installer that bundles Wine. It needs macOS Catalina 10.15.7 or later and supports Intel and Apple M-series chips. The browser WebTerminal is an alternative.
Is MT4 the same as MT5?
No. They are separate platforms and accounts are not interchangeable — an MT4 account cannot log in to MT5. MT5 adds more timeframes (21), more order types, depth of market and a multi-asset strategy tester.
Do I need a broker to use MT5?
To trade real money, yes. The download alone gives you demo access at most; you log in with the account number, password and server from a broker that offers MT5.
