Position Sizing, Pip Value & Margin FAQs
How do you calculate forex lot size from stop-loss pips and account risk?
First, multiply your account balance by your risk percentage to find your Dollar Risk (for example, $10,000 × 1% = $100). Next, divide that Dollar Risk by (Stop-Loss in Pips × Pip Value per Standard Lot). On EUR/USD where 1 standard lot equals $10 per pip, a $100 risk with a 20-pip stop-loss gives $100 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.50 standard lots (5 mini lots or 50 micro lots).
What is the pip value of Gold (XAU/USD) on MT4 and MT5?
On almost all prop firms and forex brokers using MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5, 1 standard lot of XAU/USD equals 100 troy ounces of gold. A $1.00 price move in gold (for example, from 2,650.00 to 2,651.00, often counted as 10 pips of $0.10 or 100 points of $0.01) equals $100 per 1.00 lot, or $1.00 per $0.01 micro lot.
How does a Cent Account change position sizing compared to a Standard Account?
On a Cent Account (offered by brokers such as Exness, JustMarkets, HFM, VT Markets, and Valetax), 1.00 Cent Lot equals 1,000 units of base currency (0.01 of a standard lot), meaning 1 pip on EUR/USD is worth $0.10 per 1.00 Cent Lot and $0.001 (0.1 cents) per 0.01 Cent Lot. This allows beginners with $10 to $100 to apply exact 1% risk rules without hitting the 0.01 standard lot floor.
Does higher leverage (like 1:500 vs 1:100) increase my risk per trade?
No—if you size your lot based on your stop-loss distance and fixed dollar risk, your loss at the stop-loss is identical whether leverage is 1:30, 1:100, or 1:1000. Leverage only determines how much Required Margin is locked to open the position and how much Free Margin buffer remains before your account hits Margin Call or Stop-Out.
Why should scalpers include spread and ECN commission in position sizing?
On tight stop-losses (5 to 10 pips), execution cost consumes a large share of your risk budget. For example, a 1.4-pip Standard STP spread on a 7-pip stop-loss eats 20% of your stop distance immediately upon entry, whereas a Raw ECN account (0.1 pip spread + $6/lot round-turn commission, or ~0.7 pips all-in) cuts that friction in half.
