Pending Orders in Forex: Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop & Sell Stop
Learn how Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop, and Sell Stop pending orders work in MT4/MT5, including slippage rules and execution triggers.

Pending orders in forex are conditional instructions sent to your broker's server to open a long or short position automatically only when the exchange rate reaches a specific future price level. Instead of clicking Buy or Sell at the current market quote, MetaTrader 4 (MT4), MetaTrader 5 (MT5), and cTrader divide pending entries into four core order types: Buy Limit (buy below current Ask), Sell Limit (sell above current Bid), Buy Stop (buy above current Ask), and Sell Stop (sell below current Bid). Mastering which order triggers on the Bid versus the Ask prevents missed entries and protects against news slippage.
1. The 4 Core Pending Order Types Explained (Price-Level Matrix)
Before placing a pending order, you must answer two structural questions about your trade setup:
- Do you want to go long (buy) or go short (sell)? (See our foundational breakdown of long vs short in forex).
- Is your desired entry price better than the current market price (a pullback/retracement) or worse than the current market price (a momentum breakout)?
In foreign exchange execution, Limit orders anticipate a price reversal or pullback into support/resistance at a more favorable price, while Stop entry orders anticipate continuation momentum breaking through a key barrier. Because every currency pair carries two live quotes—the Bid (where sell orders execute) and the Ask (where buy orders execute)—each pending order watches a specific side of the quote book. For a full breakdown of how spread mechanics separate these two prices, review bid vs ask price in forex.
| Pending Order Type | Trade Direction | Placement Relative to Current Price | Price Quote That Triggers Execution | Execution Behavior After Trigger | Ideal Market Structure Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy Limit | Long (Buy) | Below current Ask price | Ask price drops to or below Limit level | Fills at your Limit price or better (lower) | Buying a pullback into a demand zone or horizontal support floor |
| Sell Limit | Short (Sell) | Above current Bid price | Bid price rises to or above Limit level | Fills at your Limit price or better (higher) | Selling a rally into a supply zone or horizontal resistance ceiling |
| Buy Stop | Long (Buy) | Above current Ask price | Ask price rises to or touches Stop level | Converts into a Market Order (can slip) | Buying an upside breakout above a consolidation high |
| Sell Stop | Short (Sell) | Below current Bid price | Bid price drops to or touches Stop level | Converts into a Market Order (can slip) | Selling a downside breakdown below a support floor |
| Buy Stop Limit (MT5 only) | Long (Buy) | Stop above Ask; Limit below Stop | Ask hits Stop, then places a Buy Limit | Fills only if price pulls back to Limit level | Catching a breakout-and-retest automatically without chasing |
| Sell Stop Limit (MT5 only) | Short (Sell) | Stop below Bid; Limit above Stop | Bid hits Stop, then places a Sell Limit | Fills only if price pulls back to Limit level | Catching a breakdown-and-retest automatically without chasing |

2. Visual Price-Level Examples on EUR/USD
To see how all four pending orders sit around the live market price, assume EUR/USD is currently trading at 1.0850 Bid / 1.0851 Ask (a 1.0-pip spread):
A. Buy Limit (Buying Cheaper at Support — 1.0820)
You identify a strong 4-hour institutional demand zone at 1.0818–1.0820, 30 pips below the current price. Rather than staring at the screen for hours, you set a Buy Limit at 1.0820 with a Stop-Loss at 1.0800 (20 pips risk) and a Take-Profit at 1.0860 (40 pips target).
- Important Bid/Ask Rule: Most MetaTrader charts plot only the Bid line by default. If the EUR/USD chart low prints
1.0820(Bid) while the spread is1.2 pips, the Ask price only reached1.08212. Your Buy Limit at1.0820will not trigger unless the Ask price touches1.0820(meaning the Bid line must dip to1.08188). Always add a 1-to-2 pip spread cushion above support when placing a Buy Limit.
B. Sell Limit (Selling Higher at Resistance — 1.0885)
Price is approaching a daily resistance ceiling at 1.0885, 35 pips above the current quote. You place a Sell Limit at 1.0885 with a Stop-Loss at 1.0905 and a Take-Profit at 1.0840.
- Because short entries open on the Bid price, your Sell Limit triggers the exact millisecond the chart's Bid line touches
1.0885. However, your protective Stop-Loss at1.0905is a buy-to-close order that triggers on the Ask price.
C. Buy Stop (Buying an Upside Breakout — 1.0865)
EUR/USD has been coiling inside a tight 15-pip Asian-session box capped at 1.0862. To enter only if buyers break out above the range during the London open, you place a Buy Stop at 1.0865. If price stays inside the range or drops, your order never activates, keeping your capital out of a false setup.
D. Sell Stop (Selling a Downside Breakdown — 1.0835)
Using the same Asian range, if support sits at 1.0838, placing a Sell Stop at 1.0835 enters you short only if sellers force the Bid price down through the floor to 1.0835.
3. Why Limit Orders Avoid Negative Slippage While Stop Orders Can Slip
As detailed in our technical comparison of market order vs limit order mechanics, Limit orders and Stop orders interact differently with ECN/STP liquidity books during high-impact economic events such as US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP), Consumer Price Index (CPI) releases, or Federal Reserve rate decisions (track upcoming events on our economic calendar):
- Limit Orders Provide Liquidity (Price Certainty): A
Buy LimitorSell Limitspecifies the worst price you are willing to accept. Under normal and volatile conditions alike, a Limit order fills at your requested price or better (positive slippage). It does not suffer negative slippage, though it carries non-execution risk if the market reverses a fraction of a pip before your level. - Stop Orders Consume Liquidity (Execution Certainty): A
Buy StoporSell Stoplies dormant until the trigger quote is touched, at which point it converts into an aggressive Market Order. If you place aBuy Stopat1.0865right before NFP and the data causes EUR/USD to gap instantaneously from1.0850to1.0882, your Buy Stop fills at the first available liquidity level (1.0882) — handing you 17 pips of negative entry slippage. Since your pre-set Stop-Loss remained at1.0845, your effective risk just widened from 20 pips to 37 pips, instantly distorting your planned risk-reward ratio in forex and potentially breaching a prop firm daily loss limit. Read our full guide on slippage in forex to understand how order books handle price gaps.
4. MT5 Stop-Limit Orders & Expiration Timers (GTC vs Specified)
MetaTrader 5 (MT5) adds two hybrid pending orders that do not exist in legacy MT4: Buy Stop Limit and Sell Stop Limit.
- How a Buy Stop Limit Works: Suppose EUR/USD is at
1.0850, and resistance sits at1.0870. You want to buy a breakout only after price breaks1.0875and then pulls back to retest1.0870. You set the Stop Price at1.0875and the Limit Price at1.0870. Nothing happens until the Ask reaches1.0875; once touched, MT5 automatically places aBuy Limitat1.0870.
Furthermore, every pending order should carry an Expiration Rule:
- GTC (Good 'Til Cancelled): The pending order stays active on the broker's server indefinitely until filled or manually deleted. Leaving forgotten GTC orders active over a weekend or into an FOMC meeting is a leading cause of accidental account drawdowns.
- Today / Specified Time: Automatically deletes the pending order if it has not triggered by the end of the current trading session (for example,
17:00 EST), ensuring stale intraday setups never fill overnight while you sleep.
According to institutional market microstructure research from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), automated electronic order books account for the vast majority of global spot FX execution, making server-side pending order management essential for retail traders.
5. Broker & Prop Firm Execution Comparison for Pending Orders (2026)
When trading with pending orders, check whether your broker or proprietary trading firm enforces minimum Stop Levels (minimum distance in points from current price to place a pending order) or restricts straddling high-impact news with Buy Stop and Sell Stop brackets:
| Broker / Prop Firm | Platforms Supported | Minimum Stop/Limit Distance | Raw Spread Option | Pending Orders During Tier-1 News | Review & Rules Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exness | MT4, MT5, Exness Terminal | 0 points (No minimum stop distance on majors) | 0.0 pips + up to $3.50/side | Allowed (1:200 HMR leverage cap applies 15m before/5m after) | Exness Review |
| Vantage Markets | MT4, MT5, TradingView, ProTrader | 0 points on Raw ECN | 0.0 pips + $3.00/side | Allowed on standard retail accounts (subject to live liquidity) | Vantage Review |
| JustMarkets | MT4, MT5 | 0 points on Pro & Raw Spread | 0.0 pips + $3.00/side | Allowed on standard retail accounts (spreads widen at news) | JustMarkets Review |
| FTMO | MT4, MT5, cTrader, DXtrade | 0 points | Raw institutional feed + commission | Restricted within 2 mins before/after restricted news on swing/standard tiers | FTMO Review |
| The5%ers | MT5 | 0 points | Spreads from 0.0 pips (High Stakes) | Bracket/straddle pending orders around high-impact news prohibited | The5%ers Review |

Pending Orders in Forex: Your Questions Answered
Why didn't my Buy Limit order trigger when the candle wick touched my price?
By default, candlestick charts display only the Bid price, whereas a Buy Limit triggers on the Ask price (Ask = Bid + Spread). If your Buy Limit is at 1.0820 and the spread is 1.5 pips, the chart's Bid wick must drop to 1.08185 for the Ask price to reach 1.0820. Enable the Show Ask Line setting in your MT4/MT5 chart properties (F8) to see both lines clearly.
Are pending orders stored on my computer or on the broker's server?
All four standard pending orders (Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop, Sell Stop) as well as attached Stop-Loss and Take-Profit levels are stored server-side on your broker's execution server. They will trigger and execute even if you close MetaTrader or turn off your computer.
Does placing a pending order use up my free margin before it triggers?
On standard retail MT4 and MT5 accounts at brokers like Exness, Vantage, and HFM, a resting pending order does not tie up Used Margin until the market reaches your trigger price and converts the pending order into an active open position. If you do not have enough Free Margin at the moment of trigger, the server cancels the pending order automatically.
What is the difference between a Sell Limit and a Sell Stop?
A Sell Limit is placed above the current Bid price to sell into a rising rally at resistance (expecting price to bounce downward). A Sell Stop is placed below the current Bid price to sell a downside breakdown (expecting bearish momentum to continue falling).
Can I use Buy Stop and Sell Stop straddles before NFP on a prop firm account?
Most proprietary trading firms (including FTMO, FundedNext, and The5%ers) explicitly prohibit "news straddling"—placing simultaneous Buy Stop and Sell Stop orders seconds before a Tier-1 news release to exploit simulated liquidity feeds. Always check evaluation rules using our prop firm comparison tool before placing pending orders around red-folder news events.
